I was just looking at money the Sox will save vs money spent on salaries...as always, there will be plenty of interesting decisions over the winter.
Let's start with the savings-Mike Napoli $13m, Stephen Drew $9.5m, Jacoby Ellsbury $9m, Joel Hanrahan $7m, Matt Thornton $5.5m, Jarrod Saltalamacchia $4.5m, Andrew Bailey $4.1m, John McDonald $1.5m, Franklin Morales $1.487m, Andrew Miller $1.475m, Junichi Tazawa $0.8m. That comes to about $63m saved if the Sox resign none of these guys.
On to raises-these players are signed next year but have an increase in salary. Big Papi goes from $14m to $15m, Jon Lester from $11.6m to $13m, Dustin Pedroia from $10m to $12.5m, Clay Bucholz from $5.5m to $7.7m, Craig Breslow from $2.3m to $3.8m for an increase of $8.6m
Everyone else is signed at the same salary, or at the mercy of the team to be automatically resigned.
In the first list, I think Drew, Ellsbury, Hanrahan, Thornton, Bailey, McDonald are gone-Saving $29.6. With the raises from the second paragraph the Sox have a net of $21m. I believe they will bring back Napoli at the same salary, and bringing back Morales, Miller and Tazawa are slam dunk moves. Bogaerts will take over the SS position for Drew (and at the major league minimum) so the question is:
Do the Sox try and re-sign Ellsbury? Do they try and re-sign Salty? That's the $20m question.
The rotation seems set next season, with 6 starters and minor leaguers Allen Webster and Henry Owens waiting in the wings. Brandon Workman is also a starter turned reliever. The bullpen needs minor upgrading.
